What is LBExpat?
The Amsterdam Lesbian and Bisexual Group is a free English-language resource by and for the lesbian and bisexual female community of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). It is intended to get us "out of the bars" and to allow us to organize events in a mix of queer and non-queer locations, with a friendly and social non-pickup atmosphere.
Why Is This Group Needed?
LBExpat (and our mailing list) aims to undermine the following stereotypes about the Amsterdam lesbian scene:
- Lesbians are cliquish
Not so. EVERY woman is welcome at our events!
- Lesbians don't ever leave the house
Some complain that lesbians only want to stay home with their partners, cats, TVs, etc.. We don't believe that this is true!
Amsterdam lesbians DO want a diverse array of social opportunities -- and this group aims to promote just that!
- Lesbians are only about "hooking up"
LBExpat is NOT a singles group. In other words, don't come here expecting to find your next hookup. This group is primarily meant to build friendships and community. In other words, the LBExpat website and forum are intended to facilitate the organization of fun social events for ALL lesbian and bisexual women (singles/couples, foreign/Dutch, young/old) and to enhance general-purpose communication across our community.
That being said.. if you do meet your next girlfriend in the process of organizing kick-ass community events -- then cool. But please understand that this isn't the point of the group!
- Lesbians aren't political
Just because we enjoy many legal rights here in the Netherlands doesn't mean that there's nothing left to fight for!
We're here.. we're queer.. and we are ready to take back Amsterdam! This group is just the forum that our community needs to enable the organization of grassroots lesbian visibility, political, and volunteer actions.

About LBExpat
LBExpat was started in February 2008 via an advertisement in the Amsterdam Weekly.
Since then, the initiative has grown, and LBExpat is now run by a diverse team of volunteers.
